You should exfoliate well 24-48 hours before your tan in order to remove any dead skin cells (this will help prolong your tan). If you shave or wax, this should also be done before the day of your tan. Do not wear deodorants or make up or any other preparation on your skin on tanning day as these can act as a barrier to the tanning solution.
How does spray tanning work?
Your body is sprayed with a solution that contains a certain percentage of DHA (DiHydroxyAcetone), a colorless sugar which reacts with the Amino acids in the dead layers of your skin and over a period of a few hours goes brown.
Is spray tanning safe?
Yes! DHA has been approved for cosmetic use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Canadian Health Ministry and most of the EU member nations. It is considered nontoxic and noncarcinogenic. DHA based Sunless tanning has been recommended by the Skin Cancer Organization, American Academy of Dermatology, Canadian Dermatology Association, The American Cancer Society and the American Medical Association.
How long does a spray tan last?
Your body constantly ‘sloughs off’ dead skin cells. This is why natural sun tans fade over a few days. Spray tanning only affects the outer skin layer, so again, as your skin cells are naturally shed, the spray tan will fade. Your tan should last 5-10 days, typically 7 days, but longer if you look after your skin by moisturising every day. However, everyone is different.
I am diabetic, is spray tanning OK for me?
DHA is a chemical derived from glycerin and was first used in the treatment of diabetes, as some diabetics are better able to tolerate DHA than glucose in their treatment! We recommend that you consult a physician prior to spray tanning.
Can pregnant women spray tan?
While there is no medical evidence saying that spray tanning can effect pregnant women, we recommend that anyone with this question consult a physician.
Is spray tanning messy?
No. Most people use a mobile tanning tent or a specific room for spray tanning. The overspray is caught within the tent, or can be caught on the filter of an extraction fan/system.
Does spray tanning have a considerable odor?
DHA may have a slight smell when it reacts with the skin, however it does not tend to have a significant odor while being applied. For salons, there should be no noticeable smell from the spray tanning alone.
What HVLP machine should I use for my salon?
If you are going to use an HVLP machine in a salon where minimal noise is essential, then we would recommend either the T100-S or the Whisper Mist by Apollo. These machines are built into sound-proof boxes which help to minimize the noise being produced by the machine.
I am a mobile user, what machine should I purchase?
We recommend either the Apollo T100 MiniMist or the MaxiMist tanning system. These machines are both lightweight and very reliable. They are built with mobile users in mind.
Will I go orange or streaky with a spray tan?
No, absolutely not! The orange color is the result of tanning pills, and older tanning agents. A professional spray tan with modern tanning agents avoids this, and streakiness is caused by improper application of home tanning creams and sprays – which is why you should always let a professional apply your tan.
Will the solution stain my clothes/bed sheets?
No, all that is rubbing off onto your clothes and/or sheets is the cosmetic bronzer that is found in the sunless tanning solution.
I notice small white spots on my client where the DHA/Bronzer didn’t seem to take…?
This can occur occasionally simply because of sweat or maybe their pores did not completely open up. The easiest remedy for this problem is to take a Q-Tip with solution on it and dab it over the issue spots. If they are larger areas, we recommend re-spraying these areas. You must be careful not to cover other areas or else this area will still be lighter than others. For women who are having this issue on their chest, we recommend using a cold wash cloth and applying it to the chest area. This will help to close the pores so that the DHA can be more readily absorbed.
Should I recommend for my clients to use Tan Extender?
We do recommend for people to use Tan Extender. Sjolie’s Tan Extender lotion has 6% DHA in it. This will be sure to fill in any voids or issued areas for your clients. Along with that, it will help to increase the longevity of their tan. Keeping the skin moisturized helps to ensure that the tan will last longer and fade evenly.
Does this mean my clients will not come to me as often while using the Tan Extender?
No. We recommend that people wait at least 10 days between tans. This helps to ensure that you do not “stack” tans on top of one another.
I usually break out in freckles when I try to tan. Will the tanning solution make my freckles come out too?
There is nothing in the tanning solution that will cause more freckles to break out. In fact, in most cases, freckles and blemishes will become less pronounced because the lighter skin areas will darken and reduce the color differentiation between the blemishes and the rest of your skin. However if you have skin damage, you may noticed those areas could appear darker after your tanning session, due to the texture of those areas being rough.
How does the ULTRA ONE tanning solution work?
The ULTRA tanning solution is made similarly to our regular aloe line. It is alcohol based, as opposed to aloe based, and is made with a rapid DHA ingredient. The alcohol combined with the rapid DHA helps to ensure quick developing results. The color, odor and longevity of the ULTRA line are the same as our regular, aloe-based solution.
I messed up a spray tan, what do I do?
You can use a paste made with baking soda and warm water to help remove some of the DHA from the skin. It may not completely remove it; however it will get the majority of the color off of the skin. In most cases, it is best to offer a free tan to help keep your clients happy!
How long should my clients wait prior to showering?
We recommend waiting 8-12 hours prior to showering and/or sweating. Any type of moisture or water could affect the results of the tan. Be sure to avoid sweating, rain and any source of water from hitting the skin if possible. Also avoid wearing clothes that rub against the skin as this could also affect the results of the tan.
Expectations….?
One of the most important aspects of running a sunless tanning business is the expectations that you set forth to your clients. It is a necessity for you to inform them of the proper pre & post care routines that they need to do to ensure they experience the best tan possible. You need to set the expectations as to what is required for sunless tanning and what they should expect IF they do follow these steps.
